Google's AI boss: No plans for ads in Gemini
During our convo in Davos, Demis Hassabis and I chatted about ads in AI, Google's new deal with Apple, humanoids, and Gemini 4.
It’s Tuesday, January 20th, in Davos, Switzerland, where I am running on fumes after wrapping my first slate of Sources Live interviews on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum.
3 things you should know:
An xAI employee suddenly left the company after going on a podcast and saying the lab plans to essentially create a digital version of Optimus, powered by leasing compute from Tesla owners when the cars are parked and charging. Also: xAI co-founder Greg Yang is leaving after, “I pushed myself hard building xAI and weakened my immune system.”
Elon Musk continues to get very much under OpenAI’s skin.
A question some here in Davos are asking in anticipation of the chaos that will be created by President Donald Trump’s arrival tomorrow afternoon: Can the US military also jam Starlink?
Demis in Davos
Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis says the company doesn’t have “any plans” to put ads in Gemini.
Hassabis made the comment on Tuesday during a Sources Live conversation with me on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. Just last week, OpenAI said it would begin testing ads in the free and low-cost tiers of ChatGPT. “It's interesting they've gone for that so early,” Hassabis said of the move. “Maybe they feel they need to make more revenue.”
