Meta's CTO on VR layoffs, glasses, and the next AI model

My full Sources Live conversation with Andrew Bosworth during the World Economic Forum in Davos.

Today I’m publishing my full interview with Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth, which took place last week in front of a live audience at Brunswick Home on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

We went into detail on the rationale behind Meta’s recent VR layoffs, the dramatic ramp-up in Meta glasses production that’s underway, and how the company is exploring everything from AI wearables to humanoid robots. Bosworth was candid about how the VR industry hasn’t grown as quickly as they’d hoped and why they are now focusing more on bringing Horizon to mobile phones. That, of course, puts Meta on a collision course with the likes of Roblox and Fortnite, which we discussed.

The conversation also includes Bosworth's perspective on bringing Alexandr Wang from Scale to lead Meta’s big AI reset, and how they’ve changed how they build models. Meta’s first new AI model under Wang’s leadership was made available internally this month, and Bosworth told me the initial feedback has been “tremendous.” He also explained Meta’s new central “Compute” org and the challenges of integrating ads into AI chatbots.

Stay tuned for more of my Sources Live interviews in Davos over the coming days. And thanks to Disruptive for making this interview possible.
