“Over time, we think this will also unlock the ability to use voice as a kind of primary interface to computing, and to manage increasingly complex long-running agentic work.”

ChatGPT Voice product lead Atty Eleti said that near the end of OpenAI’s press call this morning announcing GPT-Live, its new generation of voice models. When I asked at the very end of the Q&A whether the models were devised for Jony Ive’s forthcoming AI device, OpenAI comms, naturally, shut me down.

A voice model that’s smart and fast enough to be the primary interface for computing is exactly what OpenAI needs for the device it’s building with Ive. Sources tell me the first device is likely to be a sensor-laden, ambiently aware, puck-like object that you control with your voice and that proactively engages with you throughout the day.
